Southwark Goes National
The Green Register of Construction Professionals, launched last October by Southwark Council, Southwark Energy Agency and local architectural firm archipeleco, is set to go National.
The great success of the 'Green Register of Construction Professionals', has prompted the decision to expand the Register and will now include individuals and organisations from across the UK.
Southwark Building Control Manager Bob Jones is ecstatic with the reaction to the Register:
"The success of this initiative has surpassed our wildest dreams, and demonstrates that these sustainable and 'green' issues are considered so important to the people in local communities as well as professionals alike".
Originally the membership to the Register was only open to those living or working with in the London Borough of Southwark, however enquiries for joining have been received from Winchester, Peterborough Coventry and the Lake District. It is evident from this, that with such a large interest nationally it has become necessary to widen the horizon. It was always a known intention that the register would eventually include other trades-persons and suppliers on the register, but this avalanche of interest has been rather unexpected.
Now the directory is being renamed 'The National Green Register of Construction Professionals'. It will have its own website, but can be currently viewed via Southwark Energy Agency's website www.southwark-energy.co.uk. The timing was just right for this innovation as companies are starting to realise, that besides the environmental implications, the value of and commitment to green awareness is a way to obtain work and create a healthy environment for the future.
Enquiries about the scheme are increasing and the response is as strong as ever. Lucy Pedler of archipeleco and inspiration behind the project has announced that:
"Applicants no longer have to live or work in Southwark to qualify for the course and we will be reprinting the literature to reflect this change. We also inviting Local Authorities throughout the UK to join as Associate members of the National Green Register of Construction Professionals. Norfolk County Council are the first to join in this capacity."
So what are the sort of green attributes required of building firms? These can include the use of rainwater harvesting, installing efficient heating systems and high levels of insulation, encouraging the use of solar panels and automatic light switches, and examining the use and benefits of natural finishes and paints.
Councillor Nick Dolezal, who holds the portfolio for transport and the environment for Southwark, is delighted that the register is such a great success;
" I am overwhelmed with the success of such a simple idea. It's absolutely magnificent that the register is going national. A big thank you to everyone involved."
Each month an event is arranged to allow the members and potential members to network. With visits to Monahan Blythen Architects new project for Soho Housing Association in Covent Garden, and with future events to include presentations by Peter Rickaby of Rickaby Thompson Associates and architect Bill Dunster on his new 'Bed ZED' (Zero Energy Development) project in Sutton, being a member has its perks!
Naturally we are still encouraging people to join, so should you want to join this increasing throng of merry professionals and tradespeople, and wish to share your ideas, innovations and expertise with other similar minded folk, please contact Samantha Bourne on 020 7525 5581 or email samantha.bourne@southwark.gov.uk. Alternatively visit the SEA website at www.southwark-energy.co.uk. Space on the courses scheduled for September and November is very limited, so book now for the experience that will last a lifetime.
