Our Past
Even as far back as the early part of the 2nd Century, Londinium (as it was known then) was described as an area teeming with businessmen and commerce. Although the emphasis on cultivating particular areas for economic growth has shifted, the importance of the capital has never diminished.
Construction can also create a wealth of opportunity to study the area from an historical point of view. Ironically it is not until the creation of new buildings that the discovery of relics and remnants of dwellings and buildings of the past are made. London is surrounded by such discoveries, challenging and delighting archaeologists and historians alike.
Finds of the remains of mammoths in Southall, the foundations of the Globe theatre in Southwark, now fully restored to how it was in Shakespeare's day and in Westminster a Roman mosaic, one of the most largest and complete in the UK, was unearthed. These are just a sprinkling of the many wonders to be found beneath the soil of London.
